Are Resume Verbs Important?

Are Resume Verbs Important?A resume verb is something you can include or leave out in your resume. This is a list of words that the Human Resources department may review and decide if they should use your information. You may want to think about including some words that are not related to your experience, however. Here are some examples of what to put on your resume and also what to leave out.Terms: Some words will not be important and will just have the employee take a test on how well they use them. For example, the words 'Communications' is usually included in resumes that list the position, but they aren't important enough to include with a specific job description. It is possible that the HR Manager might not even need a sample, but rather just want to know that you have an understanding of terms that are used. It is also possible that they just want to know if you can communicate effectively. If this is the case, then you can omit these words from your resume.Cover Letter: The cover letter is considered a resume verb. Therefore, you will want to take this item seriously. The hiring manager doesn't just want to see a phone number or an email address and they are going to wonder why you don't just include a professional looking cover letter with your resume. If the hiring manager notices your cover letter, they will want to talk to you over the phone and see if you have what it takes to work for their company.Writing Skills: This may sound strange but a resume verb is that you have to write an effective resume. The HR Manager may be reviewing hundreds of resumes a day and may find that they can't determine if someone was honest or not. They might be looking for things that you have done in the past, but you may have just as much to say about what you can do. Instead of just stating you are an entrepreneur or a writer, you might want to take the time to explain that you were able to build a team that was the highest performing.Skills: The HR Manager doesn't want to get bogged down in the things that you might do. They want to get to know the person. They will also want to see how well they work within the team. Therefore, they may find you have particular skills that you can share and they may want to know them.Abilities: A resume verb is something that can be described as your professional skills. These are things that you might have in common with other businesses. For example, if you have been in advertising, you may want to mention that. If you have been involved in sales, you may want to mention that, too.Experience: Some things you may need to include as a resume verb include being able to talk to the customers and sometimes even more than customers. It also means having the ability to work within a team. You might have to be open to talking with employees and not just trying to sell them to customers.Resume and cover letter writing are major components of the whole job search process. Some will go over these items as a part of their learning process, while others will continue with a generalized approach. Regardless of the approach, the point is to make sure that everything in the document is effective.

And, if so, how will job seekers differentiate one “great place to work” over another? According to the CEB 2014 Employment Branding Effectiveness Survey, millennials (debatably defined as individuals born between 1981 to 2000) spend more than 50% less time than Gen Xers and Boomers researching companies before applying. On average, millennials spent 12.4 hours learning about employers during their most recent job search. Other generations averaged 25.9 hours. What does this mean for employers that are hot to hire Gen Y? Employers Must Influence Today’s College Students More than ever, employers must think of innovative ways to amplify their brands in order to reach this highly sought after demographic. One critical way to stand out on campus is to do more than just promote jobs. You’ll also have to do more than just tout how great your company is. Here are ideas to consider as you plan your fall recruiting strategy: Give away some money. That’s one way to draw some attention. Scholarships and other monetary awards â€" offered directly to target universities, via student organization partnerships or to individuals â€" are effective ways to build brand awareness and make in-roads with key student populations. .ai-rotate {position: relative;} .ai-rotate-hidden {visibility: hidden;} .ai-rotate-hidden-2 {position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%;} .ai-list-data, .ai-ip-data, .ai-fallback, .ai-list-block {visibility: hidden; position: absolute; width: 50%; height: 1px; z-index: -9999;} For example, if your company hires business or STEM majors, consider offering scholarships to underclassmen in these fields. This will allow you to early identify talent, build your pipeline for the future, and learn more about the recipients. The added bonus is that it also positions your organization as a company that cares. Take the C-suite back to school. Years ago, I established a partnership between my then company and a professor at Penn State. The idea was to sponsor a capstone project for a 400-level class. At the end of the semester, a C-level executive from the company traveled with me to campus to listen to the student’s final presentations. He was so impressed that he wanted to make offers on the spot!   At my new firm, we are busy planning for a spring case competition which, I think, will excite and challenge students … and create some buzz on U.S. campuses. How can your company partner with your target universities and value to students’ academic experiences? How can your team of college recruiters engage top university talent on a more consultative level? Give them a taste of your company. Are you in the throes of a summer internship program? The best companies know the value of providing meaningful work experiences to students, though executing an eight or ten week internship requires time and human resources, as well as people dedicated to developing early careerists. .ai-rotate {position: relative;} .ai-rotate-hidden {visibility: hidden;} .ai-rotate-hidden-2 {position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%;} .ai-list-data, .ai-ip-data, .ai-fallback, .ai-list-block {visibility: hidden; position: absolute; width: 50%; height: 1px; z-index: -9999;} But what happens when summer is over? Have you ever thought of hosting externs? By offering a week-long externship during fall or winter break, organizations can nurture important relationships and stay top-of-mind with university staff, pipeline candidates and student organizations. Think of externships as excellent extensions of your corporate experience. (Hows that for alliteration!) Develop  a campus content marketing strategy. Campus recruiters are great at (and like giving) career advice and interview tips. Ask them to put pen to paper, fingertips to laptops, and write one or two blog posts that can be shared with campus career centers. Many centers have blogs that are shared with students via email and social media. This is a low cost way to provide meaningful information with the larger campus population, and extend your company as a campus partner. Create purposeful offerings with measurable outcomes. Adding programs to your existing campus strategy takes time and effort. Not only are recruiting teams expected to fill hundreds of entry level job openings, they are now being asked to develop, market, administer and measure add-on programs. Don’t overwhelm your teams! Before rolling out a new program or revamping an existing one, find a championâ€"someone who’s excited about owning the program and driving results. A well thought-out initiative can translate into real business outcomes, such as: Greater participation in on-campus events Brand lift awareness at key schools Uptick in website traffic and internship and/or full-time job applications Higher engagement levels via career-related social channels Increase in quality of hire due to early identification and pipelining What if your organization does not have the resources to do more on campus? Attract students through the interactions they have with your recruiters and managers. Encourage your teams to take a more consultative approach, by seeking to build relationships and trust, listen carefully, and foster open lines of communication. Instead of funneling candidates through your recruiting process like widgets on a conveyor belt, teach recruiters to build relationships and create positive candidate experiences. CEB’s  research also shows that millennials receive 12.5% more offers than other generations, so dedicating extra attention to the candidate experience is likely to improve campus offer to acceptance rates. Will your organization take more than just jobs to campus this fall?  What are you doing to attract and influence millennial job seekers?

The Careers Where You Can Make A Difference In The World

The Careers Where You Can Make A Difference In The World A vocation is an entertaining thing. You get up every morning and go to work for another person, and for what? For the most part, the appropriate response is cash or force or obligation. Others do it since they are on autopilot. Not very numerous individuals will say that they need to change the world. Helping other people is honorable however it includes putting your deepest desires aside and focusing on outsiders. As unappealing as this is to start with, the universe of work can get you down. At the point when cash is only a thing, there should be something which energizes you and gets you up. Having any kind of effect is a major issue, so here are four ventures which may be of intrigue. Social insurance Turning into a medical attendant or specialist is self-evident. The issue is the selectiveness of the business. Just as getting acknowledged into clinical school, you must be the kind of individual that can deal with seven years of extreme contemplating and no rest. Consequently, a hospice job can be a brilliant other option. Clinical Carts for hospice care mean there are alternate ways which will fill in the holes. Furthermore, it's increasingly about the degree of consideration. In spite of the fact that they are biting the dust, they have the right to make the most of their last minutes and you can give them that delight. Cop The police have gotten a ton of analysis as of late for the manner in which they dealt with specific episodes. Be that as it may, it merits calling attention to that they promise to maintain peace. As people, officials will commit errors and they have the right to manage the outcomes. In any case, being a police officer or lady requires interceding in people groups' lives and improving them. From getting hoodlums and putting them in a correctional facility to going to domestics, you have the ability to have any kind of effect. Not every person will concur, yet it's the idea of the activity. Secondary School Teacher Educators, as a rule, are disintegrates on youthful personalities. Yet, the individuals in positions in secondary schools are on the cutting edges in light of the fact that their understudies are susceptible. Between the ages of thirteen to eighteen, kids need coaches that will put them destined for success. Indeed, it may incorporate yelling and shouting and squealing on them to their folks. Maybe there will be dangers and tears. At long last, an educator needs to help set a youngster up forever. Instructing math or science or English and reviewing schoolwork are basic pieces of this procedure. Tell them the best way to act and they will take action accordingly. Horticultural Scientists Food is hard to come by in specific territories of the world. Individuals in Asia and Africa get it the most exceedingly terrible, and families starve thus. Tech implies researchers are very nearly an epic advancement hereditarily changed yields. Seeing how to develop food without the typical assets is a solution for hunger. A great many individuals, from people to small kids will profit as their future will increment. There is no better method to have any kind of effect than to give somebody the endowment of a more drawn out life. Don't you concur?

12 Things to Do During College to Get the Life You Want

12 Things to Do During College to Get the Life You Want 12 Things to Do During College to Get the Life You Want According to the Institute of Education Services, over 21 million students will attend an American college or university this year. Assuming there are roughly twice as many nail-biting parents concerned their sons and daughters might complete their education four years older and none the wiser, I’d like to offer some ideas to help maximize the benefits long after graduation day. Before we get rolling, let’s address what I consider the benefits of going to college. Keep in mindâ€"everydayâ€"these benefits only have a fighting chance of outweighing the cost (Is the Cost of College Really Worth It?) if you practice achieving them! Gain knowledge. Learn to live as an adult. Situate yourself for your first job. Lay the foundation to enjoy a fulfilling career. Most people behave in a transactional manner as it relates to collegeâ€"they put themselves through it to get a good, first job. That focus is not only shortsighted, but also causes the student to miss out on the most important long-term benefits of attending. Let’s have a look… Pick the right college or colleges. This comes down to two areasâ€"your interests and economics. If you were interested in engineering, don’t attend Harvard when you can go to any one of dozens of other schools stronger in that area (US News). You might also want to consider a junior college before hopping to a large, expensive university. The economics are better and you won’t sacrifice any earning power once you’re done. Choose the right major. Study what you love not what you think society considers acceptable. I’m sure for some of you, your parents will be the issue. Sometimes Mom and Dad don’t want to pay for the basket weaving degree. If that’s the case, go as generic as possible (Business, Liberal Arts). In most cases, you won’t use the specific knowledge you attained at school. You’ll learn what you need to know while working for your companies. I studied Electrical Engineering and started my career in Information Technology consulting. My first duties required me to wear a tie and develop software in a language I’d never seen before. Now, I wear pajamas to work, am a recruiter, and write books on employment. I’m the norm not the exception. Question everything. Its easier to believe a lie youve heard a thousand times than a truth you’ve heard once. I assure you, you will hear many lies. What you learn isn’t ultimately a function of what they teach you. What you learn is ultimately your application of what the teachers are attempting to teach you. If what they teach you sounds peculiar, it probably is. Never forget that the only way our society makes progress is when someone does something differently. That someone needs to be you. Start building your courage now. Simulate real-life situations. You only get return on your investment if you can apply what you learn beyond your college years. That becomes easier to do if you prepare for it. Whether you reflect at the end of each class, midway through the semester, or at the end of the course, make sure to connect the dots between what you learned and how you think it can help you in life. If you can’t figure out how to do this, you went to the wrong school or picked the wrong major or have a really bad teacher or some combination of all three. Go back to items one and two and start over. Seek opportunities to practice what you learned. The previous point focused on simulation, but this is about actually doing. Get a job in your field. If you can’t, get a job that will teach you similar skills. If you can’t do either of those, volunteer. Believe me, this item will likely yield the greatest dividends. Monitor your areas of interest and follow or connect with professionals in that space. The sad fact is you will gain more knowledge and insight by following prominent leaders than sitting in your classroom reading the textbook. They are writing, speaking, or blogging about current events and issues. Follow them on sites such as LinkedIn, Twitter, and Facebook. Many of them have blogs to which you can subscribe. You can also follow companies and review their job. It’s better to get a sense now of what that job actually entails than discovering it as an unhappy employee. Build your social media platform and keep it clean. It’s never too early to show the world you are knowledgeable and fun. Check out Your Social Media Platform: 7 Steps to Building a Strong Reputation. You will also want to review  Time for a Social Media Shower? lest you’ll need to deodorize those unflattering pictures. Get credentialed. If you’re studying a major (Engineering, Information Technology, etc.) where you can get additional certifications, go get ‘em. You should also seek training or other volunteering opportunities. Focus on the “living” part just as much as the “learning” part. Wake up. Make your bed. (Yes, make it.) Shower. Go to class. Play intramural sports. Go grocery shopping. Wash your clothes. Go to the campus bars. Join the clubs. Buy your girlfriend or boyfriend a gift. Repeat. Hang on to everyone’s contact information. They’ll be somebody someday and you’ll likely need them. Trust me. Maybe you’ll be somebody someday and you can help them. Hope for the latter. Plan for the former. Style your resume and keep polishing it. When you’re eighteen years old, imagine the resume you’d like to have when you’re twenty-two years old. Write it now! Then actually do it and start filling it in. Consider it your list of goals for college. It’s amazing how much you can achieve when you envision it and write it down. If you need a little help with what that could look like, check out The Ultimate Resume for any 22-Year-Old. Learn how to interview for a job. QA with Aoibheann OBrien, Social Entrepreneur, FoodCloud Co-Founder

QA with Aoibheann O’Brien, Social Entrepreneur, FoodCloud Co-Founder QA with Aoibheann O’Brien, Social Entrepreneur, FoodCloud Co-Founder Image Source: Food.CloudWE ALL know that  food wastage is a problem, particularly in a world where people go hungry. FoodCloud offers a solution. Four years ago, co-founder Aoibheann O’Brien was intrigued by the surplus/poverty paradox, and researched it for  her thesis. She was shocked to find that 1.3-billion tonnes of foodâ€"30% of all the food producedâ€"is wasted every year, while 1 in 7 people  don’t have enough to eat.“FoodCloud’s vision is for a world where no good food goes to waste.”She realised that making in difference would require more than research, and in 2012, met a kindred spirit in Iseult Ward. Thanks to this fortuitous meeting of minds between Aoibheann O’Brien and Iseult Ward, the not-for-profit social enterprise FoodCloud was born in 2013.Within four years, Aoibheann O’Brien, Iseult Ward and their team have made a huge impact through FoodCloud and, most recently, FoodCloud Hubs. FoodCloud has used  the disruptive power of tech (a website and smartp hone app), and a network of more than 1,000 stores and in excess of  3,000 community groups throughout Ireland and the UK, to redistribute  approximately 4,000  tonnes of food (creating 8.8m meals), and save the environment from at least 7,700 tonnes of Co2 emissions.FoodCloud recently took  its operation to the next level, joining with Bia Food Initiative, an operator of three Irish food redistribution hubs in Dublin, Cork and Galway, to introduce FoodCloud Hubs. This  expands the range of items that can be redistributed to include canned goods, frozen meats, chilled dairy, cereals, pantry basics and non-perishable items. These are items that can’t be sold in-store due to  damaged packaging, errors in orders, out of season goods, or impending use-by/sell-by dates.Aoibheann O’Brien (pictured below, left) with co-founder Iseult Ward) took some time out from her schedule as CEO of FoodCloud Hubs to speak to AGENT about the FoodCloud story, her inspirations and motivations, and her advice to entrepreneurs on the verge of starting their own businesses.Image Source: FoodCloud (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); 10 Questions for  Aoibheann O’Brien (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); 1.  Briefly tell us what your business is about, and describe your business goals.FoodCloud is a social enterprise that connects businesses with surplus food with charities that need it.  FoodCloud has two solutions. FoodCloud connects retailers with surplus food directly to local charities in the UK and Ireland through a unique software platform. Using the platform, staff in a store can upload details of their surplus food and local charities linked to the store through the FoodCloud system receive a text message to notify them of the availability of the surplus food.FoodCloud Hubs rescues, stores and redistributes large volumes and a diverse range of surplus food from farms, manufacturers, and distributors, to the charities across Ireland in manage able quantities. There are currently three FoodCloud Hubs nationally in Cork, Galway, and Dublin.FoodCloud’s vision is for a world where no good food goes to waste.2. What age were you when you realised you wanted to run your own business? It started when I was in university, 4 years ago. I decided to write my thesis on the issue of food waste. I was shocked at the statistics. Globally, 1.3-billion  tonnes of food is wasted annually, which is 30% of the food that is produced. At the same time 1 in 7 people don’t have enough to eat. That year, I met my co-founder Iseult Ward at an event about social enterprise. We were both passionate about food and finding a sustainable solution to solve the considerable social and environmental issues of food waste and food poverty while also building strong community relationships. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); 3.  Who are your business icons and inspirations?Mary Robinson is a big inspiration and heroine of mine. Throughou t her career she worked to address social injustices, always challenging the status quo even when it wasn’t popular, and now she is focused on highlighting and addressing the challenge of climate change. I love her energy and dedication to what she believes in.Iseult Wardâ€"co-founder of FoodCloudâ€"is another. We have influenced and supported each other. Setting up a business can be challenging and is much more fun when you are doing it with a co-founder, sharing ideas, challenges, experiences along the way. Everyone should have a co-founder!4.  What has been your biggest challenge in business, and how did you surmount it?When we first started, nothing like this was happening at scale in Ireland. We started out with a very low-tech solution. Our first donation was arranged through online research and phone calls. We facilitated a donation between a farmer’s market and a local charity. It was great to see the positive impact we could potentially have, even on such a small scale, and this inspired us to do more.We spent months looking at international companies to see what others were doing to address the problem. There was lots of brainstorming involved and, eventually, we resolved that technology would be the easiest way to link supply with demand. Before developing any technology, though, we focused on building relationships with relevant businesses, charities and organisations. By the end of 2013, Tesco had signed up for a trial with us.Now, four years on, we can appreciate the impact FoodCloud has started to make, having worked with over 2,800 different charities. Since the beginning of this year, we’ve partnered with 70 companies per month. We have redistributed the equivalent of 8.8-million meals to charities in Ireland and the UK. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); 5.  Work-Life balance: is it possible? How do you achieve it?It is easy to spending every waking minute thinking about work, especially when you have an enterprise that you are passionate about and has a positive social impact. But it is important to avoid burn-out. Spending time with friends and family is so important. Some of my best ideas come when I am less distracted with the day-to-day, and have more time to think!6. What is the first thing you do every day?I’m trying to get into the habit of getting a bit of exercise and stretching, but that is a bit hit and miss. Unfortunately, I’m one of those people who reaches for my phone to check what was going on in the world while I was asleep! (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); 7. What screen saver picture is currently on your phone?A picture of me, my mum and my niece.8. What is the most important app on your mobile phone, and why?Whatsapp or Spotify. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); 9.   What item do you never leave the house without, and why?I am notorious for leaving the house without everything (including wallet, keys, phones) so getting out the door wit h all of those is an achievement in itself for me.10. What advice would you give to your younger self starting out in business?Just start doing â€" even in a small way.  You don’t have to quit your job but you have to start doing something to test your ideaâ€"talking to people, taking actionâ€"otherwise you will never know!Infographic source: FoodCloud

The Secrets of Successful Internet Conference Marketing Part 2

The Secrets of Successful Internet Conference Marketing â€" Part 2 4 The LeWeb3 conference brought to Paris all kinds of people from Internetpreneurs to professional bloggers, from hardcore gamers to so-called Old Media journalists. Many came to listen, but most came with a message to spread. This is Part 2 in my series of articles on how they did it. Presentations Whether you were an event sponsor or not, being onstage was a great way to get your activities mentioned loudly. Reps like Mikko Pilkama from sponsor Nokia were able to talk about Connecting People and many of the venture capitalists present were able to tout their current or past successes, who in some instances were themselves sponsors of the event. After the first day of the conference, most people were excited about Hans Rosling's mind-opening talk while the second day's politics angered many.eval What do those have in common? They will be remembered for quite some time because they generated a strong emotional impact on the audience. Business Cardseval The trading cards of any business occasion, everyone had them in different colors, sheens, thicknesses, you name it. I liked the back of the Maxthon card here on the right with it's on the brain imagery; many of the cards I saw either had nothing on the back like my own â€" for writing a note before handing it out, I would think â€" but perhaps other like-minded people were hoping for some Hugh Macleod beautification? One annoyance of the double-sided cards was when the back design didn't correspond well with the front, which just shows how some people tend to neglect their backsides. The Oyez! card was very slick and so sturdy that I considered using it as a laptop stand. A number of people took a risk with non-standard sizes in the hopes that they would stand out, and they were probably right. However, you want people to actually keep the card which means that it must fit in their wallet/pocket/cardholder or they're just going to toss it into the nearest garbage can like the official conference program handouts that were already out-of-date when given to arrivals on the first morning. Here are some great tips for this key branding tool. Parties Netvibes threw a terrific party at the not-yet-opened on the first night of the conference. Everyone had a great time although no one would call it a networking party, as any conversation attempt quickly became a yelling contest where you were trying to one-up the person facing you and their ears were already buzzing intensely by that point. Not too bright, I lost my voice in the first hour ?? Did the party gain any goodwill for Netvibes as its sponsor? If so it's because Thomas Crampton (International Herald Tribune), Thierry Bézier (20minutes.fr videoblog) and a few other journalists had as good a time as I did, and even then I'm not so sure it was worth it. Contests Microsoft, pushing Windows Live, had a contest where booth passersby were given what looked to be a severed Ethernet cable. Takers had to wait their turn to plug it into one of the available computers and see if they'd won a prize â€" webcam or mouse, if memory serves. The colored pile of severed cables alone was so unusual an eyecatcher, that it was likely the only reason anyone visited the booth at all, which means that it worked quite well. Of course, it didn't hurt Microsoft to demo Windows Live for you while you waited to tempt destiny. Stickers At their party, Netvibes were giving out stickers by the handful. The stickers were similar to their subscription button but not identical as you can see. People were having fun plastering other guests with them and generally putting them everywhere. GroupeReflect left out circular stickers at Marc Goldberg's CGS5.0 Afterparty, one of their confusing .gr logo (one of the Greek Siteowners.com guys wondered about it out loud) and another for their French Web2.0 metasite DeuxZero.com. Snipperoo gave out kitschy bumper stickers with the slogan â€" go figure â€" Widgets are the bumper stickers of the Internet, and for their sake I hope that their cars aren't the only bearers of them. Finally, Alianzo had small rectangles for their Bilbao.bi site, not too memorable and sort of surprising for them as they usually do good work. So were the stickers useful? It all depends on whether people threw them away or stuck them on their laptops, since laptop lidspace is becoming quite lucrative. Next up in Part 3 of 3 â€" More secrets gleaned during and after the conference

How to Attract Tech Talent with Your Company Culture

How to Attract Tech Talent with Your Company Culture Ive had a chat with  Brendan Bank, CIO of Booking.com  to find out all of his secrets about creating a kick-ass company culture to hire tech talent from all around the globe! Listen to the interview below and be sure to subscribe to the Employer Branding Podcast. About booking.com and Brendans role: Booking.com is an accommodation website, we bring supply from hotels, bed and breakfasts, apartments, holiday homes together with customers from all over the world. So we are by far the largest online accommodation website in the world and depending on how you count, were the third largest e-commerce company in the world. I am CIO, so Im responsible for all technology within booking.com including all the product phases and technology. So we dont have a CTO, CIO and CTO are embodied into a single role. Currently in technology, theres around a 1,000 people, most of them based out of Amsterdam, where we build new products and services for our customers and our partners. Using  culture to attract and relocate new hires: So, we started out trying to find people in Amsterdam. That didnt work. We then expanded to the Netherlands. That didnt work. Basically for every person in the Netherlands, there are about three jobs in technology, theres a huge under-supply. So we went out and we got CVs in through our website and then we got this one CV and the guy looked really promising. And it was just great and so we invited him to Amsterdam, and he came into reception and the guy didnt speak English. So we really had to learn the basics of how do you recruit from afar. From that moment on, we said, Okay, this needs to be different. We really need a good process. We need a better upfront check if somebody can speak English because thats our corporate language. And gradually we broke into more areas and found more talent. Then we had a couple Russian people and they loved to work with us so they were very active, we got a lot of referrals from them. This is how it grows and grows and then together with our culture, which is very strong with diversity, our product needs to work everywhere and so when you stay locally relevant and globally scalable. To be that relevant, we also need to understand what the cultural differences are when people book room. Because there are many differences. If you look at Japan, if you look at the United States, if you look at Europe, even by country there are different booking patterns. So for us to recruit, it was almost a necessity which we needed that global footprint also in our employees to make sure that localisation in our website really feels local. So tying back, diversity and the cultural frames were used, diversity to give it the strength, back to recruitment and then it all came together. So now we have about 70 nationalities in Amsterdam in IT, it goes to over 100 in Amsterdam if you also include the call centres and all the other departments. The  consumer brand in relation to the  employer brand: I think if you are an e-commerce professional and you have experience in tech, then we play in quite a big league, and people know us, generally. And so what we see is that right now around 70% of people that apply with us have just booked with us, so thats interesting. I think your brand just helps. So we show potential candidates, what we are all about, and they are like, Okay, this might be a nice company to work for. So I think the consumer brand really helps there. But to the employee market we really brand ourselves as a tech company and to consumers, its much more consumer brand. There is overlap, but it is not exactly the same. The top  channels for  recruiting and attracting talent: Recruitment through referrals has really picked up this year. We put a lot of emphasis on it, we improved the program a lot, we also feedback constantly through to people that refer candidates, and that helps a lot. So we got a lot more confidence from our employees that if they put a referral in, its not this black hole that is talked about, and that helped a lot. So from our hires currently over 40% are now referred, which is great. The other channel which is really up and coming is LinkedIn, so thats a very strong channel. And then we have some paid channels that are also working out. But we paid a lot a lot of learning money on paid channels because theres a lot a lot of money spent on advertisements that never produced one single candidate job boards, advertisements, online advertising, placement, anything. We tried everything basically. Booking.com employee blogs: We started the blog three years ago. Actually it started as a fun project because we had some stuff that is open source. So we created some open source offers  that we released in the market. We wanted to blog about it. So we put up this blog  and very quickly it turned out that many of our candidates who were later hired, read those blogs, because they really want to know what our company is about. They want to see some snippets of our code, because good developers, they can see the culture through how the code is written. So they know what you are based on the blog. Nowadays, we try to publish one article a week, which is hard because you have to distract the engineer and developer and designer to write something up, and theyre not professional writers. It takes a little bit of time, but its well worth the investment. It radiates this culture even before theyve even met you. So I think its a great way to communicate with potential candidates. Theres also workingatbooking.com, which is our recruitment portal, and there you find a lot of blogs on the rest of the company, so not just tech but also customer service, finance, marketing, the whole range of jobs that are there. And then we have a blog on Dribble  [and Medium], which is more a designer focused blog where we publish all kinds of designs and we talk about design. Mistakes to be learnt from: Define your culture very clearly. So what is it that you want to radiate out? Because talent these days, you can hire talent but talent also chooses you. And they choose you based on the company culture, not so much on pay, because the pay is relatively the same anywhere. So, define the culture, make it very clear what youre about, make it very clear how you do work, and then people can choose themselves if they fit into that culture. For instance, not everybody fits into booking.com and that is fine. Thats its totally fine. There are people that dont like to work with us and we accept that. Because there is no cultural fit, and if there is no cultural fit from both ends, it will not work. So thats the main thing that I would say is important and there is a whole list of other things that, for instance, take care of the partners. If you relocate so many people, we relocate about 80% of all our hires to the Netherlands because most of these hires are not in the Netherlands, you need to take care of their families, their children, you need to pay tuition for school, etc. So you need to do a lot to make these people feel at home. So dont just  take care of the employee but you also have to take care of their partner, making sure that they feel also at home in Amsterdam in this case,  in the country where they are hired. Connect with Brendan on Twitter @BrendanBank  and make sure to subscribe to the Employer Branding Podcast.
