The 5 books you must read to be successful

The 5 books you must read to be successful The 5 books you must read to be successful I post about a lot of books. Most people don’t have the time to read them all, so here are a few of my must-reads.1.  InfluenceWhat is it?Most consider it the single best book on the psychology of persuasion. What did I learn from it?There are universal principles that make something influential: scarcity, authority, social proof, liking, reciprocity, and consistency.  This video is a great introduction to Cialdini’s research:Check out the book here.2.  Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates UsWhat is it?The best, most accessible research-based book on what motivates us.What did I learn from it?For jobs that require creativity and problem solving, research shows we’re motivated by a desire for autonomy, mastery and purpose. Money is really only a motivator for work that does not inspire passion or deep thought. The single best motivator is progress, and the best predictor of success is “grit.”My notes from the book are  here. Watch Dan Pink’s TED talk  here.Check out the book  here.3.  The Power of HabitWhat is it?An engaging read that explains the science of how habits work - and how we can change them. What did I learn from it?About  40% of the actions we perform in a day  are habits - so we’re on autopilot almost half our life.  Identifying what triggers  your habits is key.Assigning new habits to established triggers  is how you change a bad habit into a good one.  Friends can be a major part of whether you’re able to change for the better. Here’s a great interview with author Charles Duhigg about the book.Check out the book  here.4.  The Longevity Project: Surprising Discoveries for Health and Long Life from the Landmark Eight-Decade StudyWhat is it?They studied over 1000 people for the duration of their  lives â€"  from childhood until old age - giving them regular physical and psychological tests and tracking the results. What they discovered confirmed some things we all believe about what it takes to live a good, long life - and more interestingly  they found out where our common beliefs are wrong. What did I learn from it?There’s a lot of overlap between what makes us happy and what promotes a long life. Stress isn’t all bad. The good do not die young. Women don’t live longer than men because of biology. Relationships are more important than exercise if you want to live a long life. The authors discuss the study, the book and the counterintuitive things they  learned in this video:Check out the book  here.5.  The Happiness Advantage: The Seven Principles of Positive Psychology That Fuel Success and Performance at WorkWhat is it?A Harvard researcher’s very practical book on how to be happier and how happiness can improve your life. What did I learn from it?Happiness  increases productivity  and  makes you more successful. The  20 second rule  can make you a much better person. How to Choose the Right Major

How to Choose the Right Major How to Choose the Right Major A major is the subject area one studies to earn a college degree. With the high cost of college tuition, it is imperative to choose your major wisely. Some students enter college knowing what occupation they want to pursue and choose a major based on that career objective. Others dont have a clear career path and study a subject that will give them the skills they need to pursue a variety of occupations or obtain the foundation they need to get a graduate degree. Choosing a Major Based on Your Career Objective An occupation may require a degree in a specific major. For example, to become an accountant, you would have to major in accounting; or to become a physical therapist, your major would be physical therapy. These areas of study teach skills that are essential to performing these jobs. For other occupations, students have more leeway in what they can study, but there are limitations. To be an actuary, for instance, one can major in mathematics, actuarial science, business, or statistics. Aspiring conservationists also have a variety of choices, including biology, agronomy, agricultural science, or rangeland management. When a Major Isnt Specified A college degree is required or preferred for some careers, but what you study is entirely up to you. Students who know they dont have to choose a specific major can choose one based on their interests. They can also select a major that will give them the necessary skills to succeed in a variety of occupations. Students who enter college without a solid career plan should select a major that prepares them for a variety of occupations or graduate school. By taking general education courses during the first years of college, students can easily change majors if they choose a major that requires a specific area of study. The main points to consider when choosing a career include:If youve chosen a career, know what the educational requirements are, and select a major accordingly. If you havent chosen a career, select a major that is flexible and can give you valuable soft skills. It is essential to be both interested in the subject matter and have the ability to succeed in that area of study. Considerations for Selecting a Major When selecting a major, it is important to consider certain aspects of a field of study, such as your interests, your ability to do well and the job outlook, to determine if it is the right career path for you. Career Interests If you are considering a particular major because it is a requirement for your career path, it is hopefully something that interests you. If it doesnt, it might be prudent to either reconsider your occupation or find out if there are alternative areas of study that interest you more. It will be nearly impossible to do well in school while studying something that bores you. Chances of Success at Obtaining the Degree The area of study you are considering may seem extremely interesting, but consider if earning this degree is feasible. Also, you will need to be able to get good grades. There will also be required courses outside of your major. For instance, to earn a business degree with a major in marketing, you will also have to take accounting, economics, and statistics classes.   Dont major In a subject that Is beyond your abilities. Most people cant succeed in every area. For example, if you arent good in math, its a bad idea to major in that area or anything that involves numbers such as statistics. Chances of Finding Employment You have determined that not only do you have a great interest in a particular major but also an aptitude- or natural talent- for it. It seems like the right choice for you but will it lead to your chosen career? Even with occupations that dont specify a major, try to choose something that will increase your chances of finding employment after graduation. Do some research to learn what degrees are held by people in your area of interest. Majors That Offer More Than One Career Opportunity Some individuals choose majors solely based on an interest in the course material. It is especially common with liberal arts subjects. Theres nothing wrong with that, and it is in keeping with the spirit of what education should be about. That doesnt mean, however, that you should hastily pick something and leave your future up to chance. Find out what graduates who studied in this area have gone on to do. Then make sure at least one of those options, if not more, are suitable careers for you. Employment Outlook It is essential to study interesting subject matter, but if it doesnt prepare you for a career that has a good future, it wont be well-spent money. Find out what the job outlook is for the career you are considering. Other Benefits of the Major In spite of having taken great care to choose an occupation, you may want to, in the future,  change your career. Think about whether your major will lock you into this career or if it will also prepare you for some  alternative options. In addition to attaining hard skills, also known as technical skills, from your studies, also amass valuable soft skills that are transferable to other occupations. They will be useful regardless of your career. While it wont help you avoid going back to school to train for a new career, you will have a good start. Graduate School Consider whether you can get a good job solely with your undergraduate degree. Some majors have minimal opportunities for those who have only a bachelors degree and also require a graduate degree. If yours does, find out if a particular area of undergraduate study is required for admission to graduate school and choose your major based on that information. Useful Resources When researching careers, a reliable source is the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). The BLS provides extensive career information such as job outlook, median annual salary, required education and skills, and links to similar careers. This information can greatly assist you in determining a career thats right for you based on your abilities, interests, and goals.Payscale is another resource that offers the latest career information, such as median annual and hourly salary, job description, and required skills. In addition, many colleges and universities offer career counseling services for students looking to make the best decision for their future.

8 side hustles that are actually scams

8 side hustles that are actually scams 8 side hustles that are actually scams Not only are we living in the age of the gig economy, we’re now officially living in the era of the side hustle. More than ever, folks with moxie are taking on after-hours challenges to supplement their day job.But not all side hustles are created equal. Some are lucrative and exciting, and can pay for your next vacation or catapult you into a new career. Others are simply scams, designed to separate you from your money.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!“There are lots of valid opportunities out there. The concept of a side hustle is empowering and can change people’s lives. But if it’s promoted as an easy gig and sounds too good to be true, it probably is,” Craig Markovitz, an assistant entrepreneurship professor at Carnegie Mellon University’s Tepper School of Business, told Business Insider. We’ve rounded up eight of the worst side hustles that will probably n ever earn you a dime. Because they’re scams. Steer clear.Mystery shopperNot all mystery shopper jobs are scams, of course. After all, there are real mystery shoppers. But as fun as the job sounds, the  mystery shopping field is overrun with scammers. Here’s how it works: The company sends you money in the form of a check that you’re supposed to deposit in your own bank account, which converts the cost of your first mystery shopping excursion. You’re instructed to test a store’s in-house money transfer service by sending back some of the money you just got. Unfortunately, you’ve wired real money from your own account and eventually, when the bank realizes the original deposit was a fraudulent check, you’re responsible for that, too.Multi-level marketing companiesMLMs, as they’re known, often have a veneer of respectability. After all, many of us (or our parents) grew up with brands like Avon, Amway, and Tupperware. But  many MLM businesses behave more like pyramid scheme s, prioritizing recruiting new members over actually selling product. If your potential MLM seems laser-focused on acquiring sellers rather than customers, that’s a serious red flag.Other warning signs include costly training and seminars, pressure tactics to get you to buy inventory, and an uninspiring product line that has poor reviews or isn’t something you’d want to use yourself.Envelope stuffingIf you’re looking for a low-pressure gig you can do from home in the evening, you’ve almost certainly seen ads for the opportunity to stuff envelopes. But don’t get too excited:  Envelope stuffing is a scam.“There are hundreds of jobs posted that claim to pay you for stuffing envelopes. Sadly, there isn’t a single job available that will pay you to do this,” Saranya Ramanathan, a personal finance blogger at  One Fine Wallet, told Business Insider. Here’s the grift: You are directed to send a small fee for instructions, after which you are instructed to recruit other peo ple to buy the same envelope-stuffing opportunity. Like a pyramid scheme, you’re only paid if other people join in.Copy editing and writingThere are enough editorial scams online to write a book, but one common one results in you performing pro bono editing for a faceless company. The con starts when you respond to an online ad looking for a writer or an editor. You conduct an online interview so there’s no easy email audit trail, and you’re given an assignment as the final step in the process. You’re asked to edit a project or write some sample articles â€" but after you turn it in, you never hear from them again.Son Ngo, who was bitten by this particular scam, told Business Insider: “The enormous number of freelancers ensures that the agency can repeat this trick again and again.”Paid online surveysDid you know that you can make money just by completing online surveys? That’s the contention of many online ads, at least. The idea is that companies are willing to pay for market research, so it’s valuable to them to pay people to complete surveys. But like other scams (like envelope stuffing), there’s no job here - you typically just pay a fee up front to learn how to get on the paid survey train, but get nothing in return.“Some survey sites make you sign up for a paid membership before you can answer any surveys. The website takes your money and then no surveys materialize,” Business finance writer Priyanka Prakash told Business Insider. “Another problem is that each survey pays so little, it could take days to make even a dollar. And many survey sites ask for your personal information, putting you in danger of identity theft.”Medical billing and codingTo be sure, there are medical billing and coding jobs that can be done from the comfort of your home; many of the people who do this work do it on a contract basis in a home office. But scammers know this and offer  non-existent medical billing jobs online. The scam, though, is that they charge you up front for training, software, and supplies needed to launch your own medical billing service. You can probably guess where this is going: These companies generally have no connection to doctors, hospitals, or insurance companies and don’t follow through with actual work.DrivingIf you have a car, you’re a good driver, and enjoy being on the road during your off hours, then driving for a rideshare company like Uber or Lyft might be a good idea. But there are want ads out there for other driving services, and they aren’t the same sort of sure bet.Often, these  driving job scammers  operate like the mystery shopping scam. They pay you up front, but for some reason they’ll cancel your services and tell you to keep some of the money for yourself - just wire the remainder back. Of course, it’s a fraudulent check and you lose both the money you wire them and the cost of the bounced check.Cryptocurrency scamsSometimes it seems like everyone but you is making money in t he world of cryptocurrency investing, and what better side hustle than one in which you let technology and a little money build a fortune on your behalf? But the world of bitcoin and other nascent cryptocurrencies is a veritable minefield, and one which you genuinely need to understand before you have any hope of striking it rich.  Crypto investors have been victimized by Ponzi schemes, for example, as well as straight-up fraudulent ICOs.  OneCoin defrauded investors  to the tune of $3.8 billion, for example, with a non-existent cryptocurrency. The best advice: Steer clear entirely. Here’s how an expert recommends avoiding a scam side hustleThere are a lot of scams out there. Markovitz recommends doing your research on any potential company.“Is the opportunity real? Ask the company to let you talk to people doing it already. If they’re reluctant, there might be a problem,” he said. You can protect yourself by following these other common sense precautions: Never pay anything up front. Any potential gig should be paying you, not the other way around. You should avoid paying for equipment, training materials, or orientation instructions. Don’t deposit a check with the intention of sending some or all of that money back to the employer right away. While there are sometimes legitimate reasons for doing this, the reality is that it’s far too easily the centerpiece of fraud. Don’t work for free. It’s okay to demonstrate your skills as a part of an interview, but do it in a way that leverages work you’ve already done, or you might find yourself working for someone for free without realizing it. They offer you too much money, or hire you too easily, without seeming especially curious about your skills, background, experience, or potential. Beware of opportunities that don’t tell you anything about the company that’s allegedly doing the hiring, or who rely on chat and conferencing rather than email for routine communication. If it feels weird, it is weird. Walk away. This article first appeared on Business Insider.

ASME Sponsors Capitol Hill Briefing on the Value of Engineering Education in K-12 Schools

ASME Sponsors Capitol Hill Briefing on the Value of Engineering Education in K-12 Schools ASME Sponsors Capitol Hill Briefing on the Value of Engineering Education in K-12 Schools During the June 12 briefing, Christine Cunningham, founder and director of Engineering is Elementary (EiE) program, discussed EiE's NSF-funded work for elementary school education. Engineering concepts and the design process are an integral part of the recently released state-led next generation science standards (NGSS), a state-led effort to improve science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education in many states and local districts across the country. But many K-12 teachers are not aware of how engineering can be used to inspire and improve student performance. On June 12, ASME, the National Science Foundation (NSF) and DISCOVER magazine co-sponsored a Capitol Hill Briefing in an effort to share the characteristics of effective K-12 science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education - described in an NSF-funded National Research Council (NRC) report entitled Success in K-12 Education - and to provide examples of innovative research-based tools for engineering education at the K-12 level, developed with NSF funding through NSF's Education and Human Resources directorate. Leigh Abts, research associate professor at the University of Maryland, spoke about his NSF-funded work at the high school level. Mo Hosni, Ph.D., vice president of ASME Education, provided opening remarks for the briefing, while Steve George, DISCOVER magazine's new editor-in-chief served as moderator. Joan Ferrini-Mundy, Ph.D., the assistant director of NSF Directorate for Education and Human Resources, next presented an overview of the aforementioned NRC report, and also described NSF's proposed priorities for the Fiscal Year 20014 budget. Christine Cunningham, Ph.D., who is the founder and director of Engineering is Elementary (EiE) program at the Museum of Science, Boston, discussed EiE's NSF-funded work at the elementary school level, and presented some of EiEs findings and upcoming comprehensive program evaluation work. Finally, Leigh Abts, Ph.D., research associate professor, A. James Clark School of Engineering, and the College of Education at the University of Maryland, spoke about his NSF-funded work at the high school level. He highlighted his work on a proposed advanced placement (AP) engineering course, as well as the universitys work on a high school math course entitled, Introductory Mathematics for Engineering Application. Self-Sailing Boats in the Atlantic

Self-Sailing Boats in the Atlantic Self-Sailing Boats in the Atlantic The autonomous automobile gets all the thunder, stirring our dreams of a technological utopia, of inattentive daily travel, of a chance to get in an extra nap on the commute. But theres another more ancient mode of travel that has made some progress in the realms of autonomy, even if it has, perhaps, stirred fewer dreams futuristic and otherwise: the sailboat. To pump a little excitement and ingenuity into the area of robotic boating, professors Mark Neal of Aberystwyth University in Wales and Yves Briere of the Institut Supérieure de lAéronautique et de lEspace in Tolouse, started the Microtransat Challenge. To win the contest, which has run every year since 2010, participants must build a sailboat, under four meters in length, which can successfully navigate, on its own, the Atlantic Ocean from the European continent to the American (or vice versa). So far, no ones managed it. Paul Miller, a professor in the Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering Department at the United States Naval Academy, and his students, have tried a few times, and this year theyre at it again. The first time was in 2014, and the boat made it out to the Grand Banks from Cape Cod and got scooped up by a scallop dragger from Canada, says Miller. They sent me an e-mail with the best subject line Ive seen. Ive posted it on my door here: Canadians Capture U.S. Navy Vessel. So I went up to Nova Scotia, picked it up, and they gave me a scallop dinner and were apologetic. Route planning for a micro-transat voyage is not a trivial matter. Images: The United States Naval Academy Miller fixed the solar panel, which had broken, and a new crop of students set about improving the programming. The students accidentally put in a bug, so in 2015, the boat sailed a very nice course from Cape Cod to Nova Scotia, rather than out to the Atlantic; [then] sailed right into a harbor in Nova Scotia where it was picked up by a Canadian scallop dragger, says Miller. So I went up there and picked it up and they gave me a scallop dinner. This year Miller and his students tried two boats, ABoat Time and Trawler Bait, both of which were supposed to avoid areas of high fishing. The first boat broke in two days, he says. Then the other one, we dont know for sure, but its exhibiting all the characteristics of having been picked up by a scallop dragger. First it was doing loopers, then it went twice as fast as its capable of going. Its either in a whale or in a boat. Wherever the boats have wound up, a great deal of engineering went into getting them as far theyve gone. Until about 2011, solar panels and computers werent efficient enough to make such an undertaking possible. Now, a 10-Watt, 12-volt solar panel and a 5-Watt, 5-volt solar panel provide all the energy needed to turn the rudder, adjust the sail winch, and run the computer (an average of 68 milliamperes). The boats have to be small not just to meet the criteria of the contest, but also so that they can be launched by a single person, and fit in the back of a Land Rover. The small size is really the challenge. Unmanned motorized Navy pistol boats crossed the ocean back in the 1970s. Lighter boats are slower and cant fight stronger currents as easily, So you have to be a lot smarter with where you go and you have to be a bit luckier with the wind, Miller says. They also have to be something his students can build in two months for under $1,000. To make sure the boats can withstand storm environments, Miller and his team subject the boats to a classic drop test. They throw them off a pier. They also submerge the boats to be sure there are no leaks. Of course, theres more to surviving an ocean crossing than storms and moisture. Theres the simple matter of trying to find equipment with endurance. For example, Miller called the company that made the off-the-shelf rudder servo he wanted to use to find out its limit for how many cycles it would produce. Theyre like, Oh, itll last you for years. And I said, Well, were sending this across the Atlantic and its going to have to operate at least three million times. There was a long pause. Then, Eh, I have no idea. So far the servo has worked as long as the boats have managed to sail. Once Miller has had a little more success with the ocean crossing, he plans to create progressively smaller boats: a three-foot, a two-foot, and then a one-foot. Ultimately, he hopes the boats will be used by oceanographic students for data collection. Just how many scallop dinners it will take before that happens remains to be seen. Michael Abrams is an independent writer. The boat sailed a very nice course from Cape Cod to Nova Scotia, rather than out to the Atlantic; [then] sailed right into a harbor in Nova Scotia where it was picked up by a Canadian scallop dragger.Prof. Paul Miller, United States Naval Academy
